A recently popular trend is to name your fashion business after a number. I don’t know why a magazine would call itself “1626.” Possibly, the founder thought his magazine was too cool for words to describe. Well, 1626 is indeed cool and one of my favorite Chinese magazines.
The part I love the most is his graphic layout and cover design. Every time a new issue comes out, the bold and avant-garde cover always never fails to impress me. The graphic layouts are pronounced with strong visual impacts, in particular the innovative collages. The use of color and visual compositions is unconventional and possesses its own characteristics. 1626 is now the fashion guideline for Chinese fashionistas and continues to directly influence the styles of China’s next generation.
The magazine primarily features street fashion including hip hop and hipster styles. It is published every two weeks in four cities in China: Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Nanniing.
